Our Incredible Edibles Journey Begins..

Today we started our Incredible Edibles journey. Millie's mum, Mary has kindly agreed to lead the project. She has lots of gardening and growing expertise and we have already learned so much! Mary told us all about her garden and the work that her family put in to produce lots of fresh, organic food. The children loved hearing about the poly tunnel, chickens and how Mary keeps the slugs away.

Here is some information on the project from the website (http://incredibleedibles.ie/)....

Incredible Edibles is a healthy eating initiative for Primary School pupils. It encourages schools across the country to get busy growing carrots, lettuce, potatoes, strawberries, turnips and herbs. Schools are supplied with grow packs containing everything they needed to grow a veritable feast of healthy foods!

As part of the project the children will plant the 7 incredible edibles:

  • Potato
  • Strawberry
  • Carrot
  • Lettuce
  • Turnip
  • Chive
  • Spinach

Mary has also kindly agreed to expand the project and will plant other seeds with the children too. We will track the progress and fill in a log book as we go.

Today we planted strawberries and potatoes. The strawberries were planted in a hanging grow bag. We placed them carefully on our beautiful roof garden with the potatoes.

Keep an eye on the blog for further updates. Thank you again Mary!
