Today we had a small ceremony in the school to mark the end of Friendship Week and to introduce a friendship bench to the school yard. The theme of the week and of the assembly was friendship and it was a lovely celebration of that and also a reminder that the friendship bench is our way of remembering our past pupil Jim.
Junior Infants 2017/2018
October 26, 2016
We will start the process of offering places for the junior infants class of September 2017 on Friday the 18th November. Places will be offered by email to the email address on the pre-enrolment form unless parents have informed the school in writing of a change of email address prior to the offer being posted. A number of places will be offered at a time and parents are asked to respond within 4 days of the date of offer. Pre-enrolled siblings of current pupils will receive offers first. Remaining places will then be offered from the pre-enrolment list on a first come, first served basis. As acceptances come in those parents will be asked to fill in registration details and make a payment to hold their child’s place. As offers are declined we will then continue to move down the pre-enrolment list and this process will continue until all places have been filled. The whole process will take a number of weeks so please bear with us, it is a process which has to be followed.
We have a number of places available in our current 1st and 3rd class, please call the office for more information on 01 2946753.

Space Week
October 7, 2016
Space week has been wonderful and has really consumed the children’s attention. The pupils from each class shared their knowledge with each other today at assembly, with each class learning about one or two planets. They love to learn from each other and it was full of information and facts. Well done to all of the classes. A selection of the work from each class will stay on the wall outside Mallaidh’s classroom for everyone to enjoy for the next little while.
Airfield Food Festival
September 9, 2016

Sports Day
June 30, 2016
On Monday the 27th June the whole school walked over to the new pitch beside the sports centre. We had a super day participating in different activities. Each pupil was either in the blue, green, red or yellow group and they came into school wearing this colour. Each class moved around the five fun stations. It was great to have parents helping out the boys and girls at each station and showing us how to do the activities. The stations were crazy waiter, beach ball travel, sack race, dress the scarecrow and the bucket and bean bag target game. There was lots of cheering and fun for the pupils as they raced through the activities. The mums and dads didn't hesitate to hop into a bag and take part in a sack race. The teachers and pupils had a great laugh participating in the sack race too. Stephanie surprised us all when she zoomed to the finishing line in no time. She must have been practising! There was delight when Anne brought each class over to the ice-cream van for a lovely treat. Well done to the green group who were the overall winners of the activities. More importantly it was lovely to see the pupils taking part, being good sports people by playing fairly and kindly and of course having fun. We were all very proud of our sparkly Stepaside Educate Together NS medals. A big thank you to all the parents who helped on the day and to Paula, Maya's Mum who organised the day.
Social Night
Friday 10th June from 8pm until late.
A reminder that the second parent and staff social night is being held in the Leopardstown Inn on Friday 10th June from 8pm.

Proclamation Day
March 15, 2016
In preparation for this day the pupils have been working on their own 'Proclamation for a new generation' which every school in the country is writing. Ours was made by combining lines from a range of the pupils own proclamations selected by members of the student council and we read this at the flag raising ceremony with Gaelscoil Shliabh Rua. We all sang the national anthem together also.
Stepaside ETNS Proclamation for a new generation
Stepaside Educate Together National School would like to thank the men and women of 1916 who fought courageously for our country and gave us the independent Ireland that we have today. In this school we believe that everyone deserves to be safe and loved, to have a family and friends, to have clean water, shelter and food. We believe that if you are sick you should have someone to take care of you and even if you are a grown-up you should have someone to rely on. We believe that everyone should be treated fairly and equally and everyone should be made welcome in this country.
Our wish for Ireland is that there will be no more homeless people, that citizens will be respected, that there will be only 20 pupils in each class, that we will have a nice health care service and that more women will be in charge so that everyone is equal.
In Stepaside Educate Together National School we ask you all to follow your dreams, to believe in yourselves and in each other and to have fun.
We believe that Ireland is our land.
Engineers Week
March 4, 2016
The engineering committee of parents have organised several activities throughout the week to create excitement about the engineering profession and to provide overview of the engineering sector, with the following 7 themes for the children to explore: Civil Engineering, Energy, Electrical/Electronics/Telecom/Robotics, Mechanical Design, Transport, Computing and Software, Biomedical. Introductory activity took place on Monday 29th February followed by class projects and activities on Tuesday – Thursday with results/projects showcased to the parents and all classes in the hall on Friday. Some parents visited the classes to give a short career talk during the week. Thank you to all those involved in this week. Photos of the event give an idea of the depth of preparation and thoughtfulness of the parents involved.
World Book Day
March 3, 2016
Today is World Book Day and what a wonderful day we have had! To celebrate children brought in their favourite books to school, many pupils dressed up as their favourite literary characters. We also had parent volunteers reading books in various languages throughout the morning reflecting the wonderful diversity in our school . Children have been listening to stories in Japanese, Spanish, Farsi, Czech, Polish, German, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese and Italian.
Happy reading!
Healthy Eating
February 26, 2016
Junior Infants have been learning all about healthy eating. We made a big food pyramid to help us to know the foods that we need lots of and foods we do not need every day. We also painted healthy meals on to paper plates - yummy!!
All the boys and girls in Junior Infants became master chefs for the day as we made sugar free scones, with the help of some very kind parents! The next day we had a picnic and ate scones and fruit. We had a lovely time and really enjoyed the delicious food.
Music Week
February 12, 2016
We have had a wonderful week here in SETNS. This has been our first music week and it has only been made possible by the expertise of some of our very talented parent body.
Parents provided percussion, drum and song-writing workshops to each class. It was wonderful and the pupils were completely engaged and entranced. They made their own instruments and wrote their own lyrics to some popular songs. These songs were all performed for each other at the assembly on Friday.
The school has also invested in a music company to provide a series of pre-instrumental workshops for all the classes. This was our 4th week of these classes and Rebecca continued teaching the pupils about low/high notes, rhythm and tempo among other things.
The week ended with the assembly which celebrated the work that all the classes have done this week and it really finished a fantastic week off on a high.
An enormous thank you to Nora, Adrian, Ger, Naimee and Adam for everything this week.

Permanent location
We are delighted to be able to confirm that the permanent location of Stepaside Educate Together NS will be beside Gaelscoil Taobh na Coille in Belarmine. This news was conveyed to us this afternoon by our patron body, Educate Together.
It is wonderful news and it is a great site. We cannot give you too much clarity on the time-frame for now, except to say that we would expect us to be here for all of this school year and most of the following school year at which point we would envisage us being in our final location at last.
We have also learned that the site will be a temporary location for the new Educate Together second-level school due to open in September 2016. They will be housed in prefabs on this site while they await their own building.
We hope that this news has made you all as pleased as we are here!

A visit from the Defence Forces
Today we had a visit from the Defence Forces. They read the proclamation, presented us with the Irish flag and answered lots of our questions. It was a very informative and interesting morning and we look forward to preparing our own school proclamation for “Proclamation Day” March 15th 2016. Thank you to those of you who joined us and well done to the pupils who bravely and competently stood up in front of the audience as part of the ceremony.

Our building is on the way!
Olivia Mitchell, Fine Gael TD for Dublin South, welcomes confirmation that a permanent school building for Stepaside Educate Together National School has finally been acquired.
Speaking during a Dáil topical issue debate, Deputy Mitchell raised the absence of permanent sites for four schools that are planned for Dublin South.
“Stepaside Educate Together national school is currently located in its second temporary location in the constituency since it was opened in 2011. Confirmation by the Minister for Education that a permanent site has finally been acquired is great news for the school’s pupils and staff and will meet the needs of the many young families in the area. Management will be informed shortly about the location of the school’s new site.
“The lack of information around the location of the Educate Together post-primary school due to open in September 2016 is also causing huge confusion and distress to parents. I have asked the Minister to ensure there is a sense of urgency about acquiring a site and making an announcement in that regard so families can plan now where their children will go to school for the next six years.”
Deputy Mitchell also raised the ongoing problem of acquiring scarce land at a reasonable price for future school needs in the area. “I believe educational infrastructure is at least as important as roads infrastructure and I ask the Minister to consider the introduction of legislation which would allow for compulsory purchase orders in respect of land for schools.”

They have taken to their new surroundings and new teachers like ducks to water and the atmosphere in here is warm and full of energy. It has been a busy but brilliant start to this new school year. Classrooms and corridors are already starting to look bright and cheery with children's artwork. Have a little look at the pictures below:

Move to Ballyogan
Stepaside Educate Together National School is now 3 years old. At the moment we are in temporary accommodation as we are on the Department of Education and Skills building list for 2015/2016. The school will be a beautiful 24 classroom school when completed and will be based in the Stepaside area.
In the interim Stepaside ETNS will share the fabulous new school building which Gaelscoil Shliabh Rua have in Ballyogan. Stepaside ETNS will have the top floor of this brand new school building while the Gaelscoil operates downstairs. It is an exciting step in our school's development and the pupils of SETNS will have the very best of everything in this new location as they await the eagerly anticipated move to their own school building within the next year or so.
Stepaside ETNS will be based in the Ballyogan site from September 2015. In the meantime come and see us in Kirwan Park if you would like to learn more about our school or call Magda in the office on 01 2946753 or email us at info@stepasideetns.ie.

Solar Eclipse
Ireland experienced a partial solar eclipse this morning. How did you watch it? We viewed it through pinhole projectors which we made by putting a small hole in a piece of cardboard box, and projecting the sun onto another piece of paper or wall behind it. This allowed us to observe the sun safely. We saw it turn into a tiny crescent.
If you missed the eclipse today you will have to wait another 11 years until 12 August 2026.

On Wednesday we had Siopa Gaeilge. All children could buy something from the Irish shop as long as they asked for it 'as Gaeilge'. On Thursday all classes in our school did some céilí dancing. Every class performed during the 'Talent Show' on Friday with renditions of Irish poems and songs. The theme for Aistear this week was St. Patrick and you can read more about it here: Aistear blog
