Children in fourth class were very busy during November becoming young engineers. As part of the STEPS Engineering Competition, children were introduced to the topic of engineering and what it involves. Children learned about the different types of engineers there are eg. mechanical, civil, biomedical, chemical, software etc. The children also welcomed two guest engineers into the classroom to further explain engineering. Proceeding this, pupils designed and constructed their own engineering projects. These were entered into the competition. Please see pictures below. STEPs Engineers Ireland will announce the winners in March!!

This group aimed to create a bridge that would allow the lighthouse keeper to travel to and from the lighthouse during stormy weather!

This group used their knowledge on circuits and electricity to create the light!
The Kite Boat
This group very cleverly placed bottles at the bottom of the boat to make it float. A kite can be attached to make it sail in the wind.
The Playground
This group produced a contemporary playground that would be very useful in the community.

This is definitely a necessity in Dublin! The children created wheels for the train using bottle caps, long cocktail sticks and pipe cleaners. This worked very effectively.
