Third Class is the fifth year in primary school and typically accommodates students aged 8 to 9. In this year students continue to expand their foundational skills in subjects like English, Irish, mathematics, and science.
The curriculum advances to include more complex reading, writing, and math concepts. Additionally, students delve deeper into subjects like history, geography, and elements of music and art. Teachers encourage critical thinking and independent learning while nurturing social and emotional development.
Third class marks a stage where students further consolidate their academic abilities, preparing them for more advanced learning in later years of primary education.

We learned about helicopters and how they stay in the air- we even made our own and tested them out! We made 2-d robots in Maths and did a 3-d shape hunt around the school grounds. It was amazing how many 3-d shapes we saw which made us appreciate how 3-d shapes are all around us.
We also learned about Kandinsky in Art and made our own version of his famous circle paintings!
We learned about kindness- we have even started writing 'Kind Notes' to give to our classmates during breaks. Everyone feels so happy when they receive one and it reminds us that no act of kindness is too small.

It's been a busy month in 3rd class! We have learned about explanation writing in English which has been fascinating! We are also enjoying our weekly trips to the school library! One of our 3rd classes has even signed up to do the MS Readathon so that we can use our love of reading to help people living with MS.
In PE, some of us have been going to swimming lessons every week which has been fantastic. The rest of us are looking forward to starting our own swimming lessons after midterm! This month, one of our 3rd classes created our own PE games which we then taught to 1st class. Everyone really enjoyed it and we were so happy to see the 1st class students enjoying themselves!
In SPHE, we have been talking about our strengths and what makes us unique! For our values, we have been talking about honesty, determination and self-belief. It's been really enjoyable talking about this with our teachers and our class. We know that we show self-belief and determination everyday! In History, we have been learning about the Stone Age. We spoke about how differently our lives are compared to our Stone Age ancestors.
In Geography, we have been learning about the environment and plants. We are doing our own experiments looking at what plants need to grow. We can't wait to see the results! We are all really looking forward to Halloween and having a break before returning to school for the festive season!

In 3C this month, we were practising our letter writing and our persuasive writing! We sent a letter to the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, trying to convince him for an extra week off school! No luck with the extra week off but he sent us this lovely letter and book about the history of Arás an Uachtaráin.

3C organised a bake sale for the DSPCA. The whole school came to support and we raised €817! Here is a picture of when Sarah and some of us went up to the DSPCA after school to hand over the money. We got a tour of the whole DSPCA and learned more about all the amazing work they do and how the money we raised will be spent.

3C planted a Mountain Ash tree on the grounds of the school the other morning. We’re looking forward to watching it grow and excited that we have left our own permanent mark on the school!
